Name: Robin Gooda

Date of Birth: 20/02/1990

Experience:My passion for angling and interest in the natural environment and surrounding water bodies lead me to Sparsholt College where I have just finished studying a national diploma in sport fisheries management. This covers huge areas of learning subjects from marine aquaculture to wetland management. This has allowed me to participate in many different practical areas and gain experience in everything from electro fishing to re-instating chalk streams.
Due to the nature of jobs that I have undertaken I can work well as part of a team or on my own. I am hard working, motivated and enjoy a challenge.

Assistant fishery manager Suffolk Water Park

During my time at Suffolk Water Park I was responsible with the day to day running of the complex. This involved everything from working in the tackle shop to netting lakes, helping angling coaches teach children and being on call 24 hours a day. I learnt a lot about running a business as I often had to handle all the money and order stock weekly for the tackle shop.

General Estate Worker Lincolnshire-
I undertook many different job roles whilst working on the estate. One day I may have been corn carting and the next day I could have been cutting out dykes for the entry level stewardship scheme. A lot of evenings where spent pest controlling.

I undertook three weeks working on a fishery in the Cotswolds water park where I participated in general fishery management varying from swim building to fish stockings.

My second placement I was with a fishery consultant also in the Cotswold water park area. This work placement was extremely beneficial and I learnt vast amounts about improving habitats in and around water bodies. A lot of the placement involved surveying the fish populations using seine nets and electro fishing. This was to determine the biomass and more often than not would end up with the removal of fish due to the water body being over populated. Another main area of the work was the planting of many different species of flora. This included yellow flag iris and juncus to try and combat erosion of the banks.

Finally I travelled to the Argyll region in Scotland. Where I have undertook a three week work placement with Lakeland Smolt. My main area of work was on the brood stock units which involved selecting and stripping the mature males and females. This was an amazing experience and I learnt a lot about the aquaculture industry.

Voluntary work
My voluntary work has ranged from close season work parties with local angling clubs. To a trip to Liverpool, during which I spent a fortnight working on the largest sustainable house in Europe, whilst living in a tipi with 12 people spanning 6 nationalities. More recently I have spent 6 weeks working on a dressage yard which has involved many aspects of the equine industry from mucking out stables, learning to ride to getting horses ready for competitions and administering treatments to injured horses.

Name: Matt Drew

Date of Birth: 05/06/1987

Experience: 6 Oct 2009 to date: Operations Delivery, Environment Agency
Team Member
I am part of a close knit team working outside in all conditions and responding to incidents as and when they arise. These incidents can vary from large obstructions in the watercourse (fallen trees, dumped vehicles, fly tipping, dead animals, ect), which have to be removed safely and efficiently, to flooding and pollution incidents. I am used to working in deep and fast flowing water in dry suits and waders, using power tools in and around the water, including chainsaws. It also involves responding to flooding and pollution incidents and dealing with them, sometimes at night or in adverse weather. I have also been on 24 hour standby when needed. This job has involved working around and with heavy plant such as tractors and 360 excavators, and using heavy lifting and winching equipment.

Ongoing: Berkshire 4x4 / Berkshire Corporate Events
Instructing and training members of other organisations in the correct method of driving 4 wheel drive vehicles off road in all conditions. This included self recovery and use of different vehicles in an off road environment. This also entailed some aspects of vehicle maintenance. I also provided support on company corporate events using quad bikes, motocross motorcycles and other off road vehicles. I have learnt how to encourage people to succeed as part of this job and how to prepare people for a difficult challenge.

Part Time: Hungerford Town and Manor Fishery:
This was a work placement to expand my knowledge of fishery management techniques. During this I landscaped parts of the fishery, rebuilt bridges, removed debris from deep water and some minor tree cutting from the river. The main method of transport up and down the river was quad bike and trailer. I also escorted rods and anglers up and down the river and supported the full time river keeper in his duties. I worked closely with Robert Starr, the full time river keeper, to ensure the fishery is running smoothly, during all weather. This means working on my own a lot of the time, completing jobs with little or no help. It also means using power tools un-supervised and using common sense to ensure jobs are done safely.

11 Jun 2007-Sept 2007: ISS Waterers Landscape, Bagshot, Surrey:
Landscape Gardener
Working outside in all weather on large office blocks with outdoor gardens maintaining the grounds. This included the use of petrol strimmers, long handled hedge trimmers, small hedge trimmers, petrol push mowers and diesel ride-on lawn mowers. I worked as part of a team during the course of a 5-day week starting at 0530 until 1500, driving a 3.5 tonne van to and from sites and the depot. I enjoyed this summer job as it was outside and also learnt how to communicate with clients and act as part of a professional landscaping team.

Nov 2007-Dec 2007: Lower Itchen Fishery Ltd, Southampton, Hampshire:
Three Weeks Work Placement
This was a work placement to expand my knowledge of fishery management techniques. During these three weeks I took part in weed cutting, fringing, restocking fish and pest control.

Jun 2007-Jul 2007: Moore and Moore Carp Ltd, Swallowfield, Berkshire:
Three Weeks Work Placement
This was a work placement to expand my knowledge of fishery management techniques. During these three weeks I took part in netting, electro-fishing, and was shown how to handle fish correctly. I was also trained briefly in how to use most equipment used for fishery management.
